Sage put down her pen. Her body warred between relief in knowing she’d left before Ian and Stiofanie were hurt and sadness. Every time she got close to someone, she left. It was the way her life had been since she was fifteen. She couldn’t help but wonder how long she would be allowed to spend here. As much as she tried to ignore it, she had grown to love the people who kept her locked in a tower. Would she be able to leave without saying goodbye to Raph? Could she stand running away without Gavin knowing?

A note shimmered to life on her end table, and she smiled despite a small tear running down the side of her nose.

I’m at a new estate today. The lands here are so beautiful. I can’t wait to show them to you one day. -G

Maybe she would have the chance to see them one day, after all.

Symon sat at his desk. The sun had set hours ago, but he found himself glued to his chair instead of in bed with his wife. With the impending celebrations, the movement happening along the border of Nysa and Speridisia, and the arrival of a Realm Leaper, Symon had made his way to bed less often than he liked. And to make matters worse, the report of raiders in Mystaira added to the complex task of ruling a rebuilding nation.

Symon read over the correspondence from Gavin once more. He couldn’t help but notice the paper was different from what was supplied before the trip, but he didn’t spend long thinking over the oddity. The fact that Gavin sent such detailed reports, and suggestions on dealing with the raiders, proved that Aryael’s intuition had been correct in naming the young fae Lord of the land. Quickly, Symon scratched out a reply: I would like to know more about the raids. Gather more details. How many raiders are usually involved? Where and when do they strike? Perhaps your suggestion of sending more sentry from Veritasailles would work. -K.S.

The note shimmered away, and Symon made to push away from his desk. Before he could stand from his chair, the journal containing Sage’s latest memory caught his attention once more. The story of her and Ian interested him. Something of the male seemed…incomplete. Almost as if part of the story were missing. Especially as he so easily allowed Sage, whom he was supposedly in love with, to disappear on a dangerous journey. Symon couldn’t imagine allowing Aryael to wade into peril on her own. In fact, it had been meeting Aryael that sparked his renewed desire to rebel and break free. He’d all but lost hope before she was transferred into his camp. Could a male who knew that depth of love actually let go when asked?

The other thing that bothered him was the matter of the insignias. No such item had fallen into their world with the girl. Could they be scattered across the continent? And if so, how likely was it they landed in Speridisia? The book, which was recovered in her pack, had proved a dead end.
